Learn several ways to divide whole numbers and decimals, when the quotient is desired as a decimal:
Strategy 1: Write division as a fraction. Convert the fraction to a mixed number. Convert the fractional part to a decimal. For example 3 / 2 = (3/2) = (2 + 1)/2 = (2/2) + (1/2) = 1 1/2 = 1 5/10 = 1.5.
Strategy 2: Write as a number of tenths, hundredths, etc. Then divide. Then rewrite as a decimal. For example, 3/2 = 30 tenths / 2 = 15 tenths = 1.5.
Strategy 3: Convert the dividend and divisor to a fraction, then divide and reduce. Then convert the fraction back to a decimal. For example, 8.4 / 7 = (84/10) / (7/1) = (84/10) * (1/7) = 84/(10 * 7) = 12/10 = 1.2.
