    Adding integers

First, students will learn how to add and subtract integers using a number line.

    Watch these Khan Academy videos:

    • Adding negative numbers example
    • Adding numbers with different signs

    Do these Khan Academy exercises:

    • Signs of sums
    • Adding negative numbers

Next, students will learn how to label a tick mark on a number line, given two other labelled tick marks. To do this, they'll start by identifying the gap between the two labelled tick marks. From this, students will be able to determine the distance between any two tick marks. Then students can skip-count forward or backward from one of the labelled tick marks, to the unlabelled tick mark, and thus determine its label.

    • Midpoint Triangle by NRICH
    • Sorting the Numbers by NRICH

    Conclude by leading this investigation:

6.NS.C.6: Understand a rational number as a point on the number line. Extend number line diagrams and coordinate axes familiar from previous grades to represent points on the line and in the plane with negative number coordinates.
