How to install Google fonts on Ubuntu

If you use Ubuntu and want to work with a Google font in Inkscape, or any other application, start by downloading the font to your Downloads folder. Suppose I downloaded the fonts Fredoka One and Arbutus Slab. Then I would run something like this:

cd /usr/share/fonts
sudo mkdir googlefonts

cd /usr/share/fonts/googlefonts
sudo unzip -o -d . ~/Downloads/Fredoka_One.zip
sudo chmod -R --reference=/usr/share/fonts/opentype \
/usr/share/fonts/googlefonts
sudo fc-cache -fv

cd /usr/share/fonts/googlefonts
sudo unzip -o -d . ~/Downloads/Arbutus_Slab.zip
sudo chmod -R --reference=/usr/share/fonts/opentype \
/usr/share/fonts/googlefonts
sudo fc-cache -fv
