Methods of teaching multiplication and division
What follows is a compilation of all the ways I've found to teach multiplication and division, excluding the speedy methods found here. These methods span various grade levels. For example, multiplication by repeatedly adding is taught long before the partial products method.
Multiplication
- Partial products method
- Repeated adding, abstractly, or by repeated jumps on the number line)
- Lattice multiplication
- Arrays and equal groups
- Base ten blocks, arranged like algebra tiles
- Exploding dots, as seen here
- Finger tricks
- Crossing lines
