K.CC.C.6

Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group, e.g., by using matching and counting strategies. Include groups with up to ten objects.

Identify whether the number of objects in one group is the same, fewer, or greater. Follow the order

- Compare by matching within 5
- Compare by counting within 5
- Compare by matching within 10
- Compare by counting within 10

Start with concrete objects and move towards abstract objects. For example, start with cards of giraffes and hippos, then move towards blue and yellow Unifix cubes. Students should be able to rearrange for matching, for counting it doesn’t matter. Students should also see that size of individual objects doesn’t affect the count. For comparing the number of concrete objects within 10, by counting, here's a lesson, and here's practice. Conclude this lesson by leading this investigation. Watch this to learn how.
