Generate measurement data by measuring lengths using rulers marked with halves and fourths of an inch. Show the data by making a line plot, where the horizontal scale is marked off in appropriate units— whole numbers, halves, or quarters.
Draw and read line plots involving fractions. As a class you could plot the jump height of students, if you have a video camera, of course. Answer questions such as “how many students jumped two and a half feet high?” You could also have students plant something and measure the height of each plant in quarter inches. Students should also get substantial practice on their own.
